Engine Diagnostics and Repair in Albuquerque, NM
A check engine light, a rough idle, or a loss of power can have dozens of possible causes. The difference between a quick fix and a costly misdiagnosis depends on the skill and experience of the technician doing the work. Worldwide Automotive brings decades of hands-on diagnostic experience to every engine problem, from computer-controlled modern engines to carbureted classics that have no onboard computer at all.
- A check engine light is a starting point for diagnosis, not a final answer. The code tells you what the computer detected, not necessarily what caused it
- Replacing parts based on a code reader without proper testing is the most common and most expensive diagnostic mistake
- We diagnose engines from every era using the right tools and methods for each system, whether it is a scan tool, an oscilloscope, or a vacuum gauge

The Problem with Code-Based Diagnosis
Many shops and parts stores will read your check engine code for free and then sell you the part the code points to. A P0171 code, for example, indicates a lean fuel condition, but the cause could be a vacuum leak, a dirty mass airflow sensor, a weak fuel pump, a clogged injector, or a failed oxygen sensor. Replacing the oxygen sensor because the code mentions it wastes your money if the real cause is a cracked intake boot. At Worldwide Automotive, we use diagnostic codes as a starting point, then test the related systems to find the actual root cause before recommending any repair.
Diagnostics for Older Vehicles
Vehicles built before the mid-1990s do not have OBD-II diagnostic ports, and many vehicles from the 1960s through the early 1980s have no onboard computer at all. Diagnosing these engines requires hands-on testing with tools like vacuum gauges, compression testers, timing lights, and dwell meters. It also requires experience with mechanical fuel systems, ignition points, and carburetor tuning that most modern technicians have never been trained on. Our shop was built around this kind of work. We diagnose and repair engines from every decade, and we do not turn vehicles away because they are too old for a scan tool.
Engine Repair and Rebuilding
When diagnosis reveals a mechanical problem, whether it is a blown head gasket, worn piston rings, a timing chain failure, or a cracked block, we have the experience to handle the repair. For some vehicles, a targeted repair like a head gasket replacement is the most cost-effective option. For others, a complete engine rebuild or replacement makes more sense. We walk you through the options honestly, explain the cost and expected longevity of each approach, and let you decide. We do not push the most expensive option, and we do not recommend repairs on vehicles that are not worth the investment.
Fuel and Ignition System Repair
Fuel delivery and ignition timing work together to keep your engine running efficiently. Problems in either system cause rough running, poor fuel economy, hard starting, and increased emissions. We service fuel injectors, fuel pumps, fuel pressure regulators, and fuel lines on modern vehicles. On older vehicles, we rebuild and adjust carburetors, replace mechanical fuel pumps, and service ignition systems from points and condensers to early electronic ignition modules. We carry the knowledge and parts access to work on systems that span more than six decades of automotive engineering.
